Credit notes

Proper supports creating both full and partial credit notes for issued invoices.

What you can do

  • Full credit note: Reverse the entire invoice.
  • Partial credit note: Credit only part of the invoice using one of two methods below.
    • Custom amount per line item: Enter the exact amount to credit for each line.
    • Quantity-based credit: Specify how many units from a line should be credited.

Additional options

  • Effective date: Choose a custom effective date for the credit note.
  • Internal reason: Provide a reason for internal use and audit trails.
  • Customer memo: Add a memo that appears on the credit note for the customer (useful for explaining the adjustment).

How to create a credit note

Use the step-by-step guide below.

Open the invoice

Navigate to the invoice you want to adjust.

Start a credit note

Click on “Credit note”.

Select the amount

For each line on the invoice, you can select to credit the full line or pick between a custom amount per line or quantity-based credit.

Set options

Optionally set a custom effective date, select an internal reason for the credit note, and provide a customer-facing memo.

Review and confirm

Verify the credited amounts and click “Issue credit note”.

Credit note emails

You can customise the content of your credit note emails to reflect your brand’s tone and voice. As with invoices, you can create dedicated email templates for credit notes in all the languages you support.
